All About the Herb St. John’s Wort

St. John’s wort is widely known for its use in treating mild to moderate depression. Studies show St. John’s wort can be just as effective if not MORE effective than anti-depressants such as Prozac, and considered safer without having harmful side effects.

Studies also show that St. John’s wort can help improve OCD symptoms (type of anxiety disorder).

The compounds of St. John’s wort regulate brain levels of dopamine, melatonin, interleukins, monoamine oxidase, and serotonin.

As a nervine (calms nerves) herb, St. John’s wort supports emotional well-being and ongoing stress, helping you to feel “sunnier” or “brighter.”

This herb has more than anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties… it has anti-viral actions, it is an antispasmodic (helps relax muscles), can be used topically for nerve pain and wound repair, it is an anti-inflammatory, it is a liver supporter/tonic, and can even help ease PMS symptoms and the menopausal transition.

Parts of the plant used are its leaves and flowers. They can be made into a tea or tincture, or infused in olive oil to be used topically.

As St. John’s wort stimulates liver detoxification, it may reduce the effects of some medications, therefore always consult with your physician and/or herbalist if taking any medication
